Protect sensitive data
Layer 1 and Layer 2 encryption, ConnectGuard, optical encryption
New regulations, such as NIS2, impose strict cybersecurity requirements—especially when it comes to critical sectors and organizations that process sensitive data and customer information. However, security measures, such as encryption, can slow down your network. Surely there must be a better way?
Physical-layer encryption (such as fiber-optic cables, copper cabling, or wireless) is a powerful way to protect data during transmission over a network. It involves no overhead and maintains your network's speed.

Benefits
Encryption helps you protect your data.
- Encryption without affecting speed or latency
- Seamless integration into existing infrastructure
- Complies with the strictest standards, such as NIS2 and GDPR
Ideal for
- Educational and research institutions
- Large companies and multinationals
- Hospitals and healthcare facilities
- Government and Defense
Good to know beforehand
Layer 1 is the physical layer, such as fiber-optic cables, copper cables, or wireless connections. Think of it as the network highway. For example: a network cable connecting your laptop to the router. Or the Wi-Fi signal from your laptop to your modem.
In addition, there is Layer 2, the data link layer. This layer manages traffic on that highway. It ensures that data is properly packaged into segments (frames), arrives correctly (error checking), and that devices do not interfere with each other when they want to transmit at the same time (access to the medium).

Your data remains secure during transport
Layer 1: Physical Layer (the highway)
Layer 1 is the foundation of all your data communication. If you encrypt this layer, you protect everything that uses your network and everything connected to it. After all, the entire network relies on Layer 1 services. Another major advantage of Layer 1 encryption is that latency is up to a thousand times lower. The security layer is also transparent and independent of the protocol.
Layer 2: data link layer (the traffic controller)
Layer 2 is the layer where data is linked. Are you already using encryption at Layer 1? If so, your data stream is already well secured. Still, organizations sometimes opt for encryption at Layer 2 as well. Why? Because physical encryption isn’t always possible. Or as an extra layer of protection on specific connections, such as point-to-point connections.

Encryption Solutions
ConnectGuard (Adva/Adtran)
We’re increasingly working with cloud-based applications. This also means more data traffic to the cloud, outside your own network. ConnectGuard is a hardware-based solution that uses physical devices to secure and encrypt network connections. With ConnectGuard™ Layer 1 encryption, you can secure your data in transit while maintaining performance, such as speed. This solution is also available with Quantum Security.
ConnectGuard™ Cloud (Adva/Adtran)
How do you secure your data connections when working with multiple public clouds? You can’t simply install encryption hardware in a data center owned by AWS, Azure, or IBM. ConnectGuard™ Cloud is a cloud-based solution that provides the same level of security without the need for physical hardware. This makes it more flexible and scalable. It allows you to encrypt your data in transit within and between public clouds.
Optical Encryption (Nokia)
Nokia Optical Encryption provides Layer 1 encryption using symmetric algorithms such as AES-256. This technology is designed with future threats in mind, including quantum computing. Thanks to an efficient key management system and low latency, it is a powerful solution for those who want to secure physical network layers, provided it is used in the right context.
Quantum Security
Quantum computing and quantum security are emerging technologies. If you want to stay innovative and be ready when the time comes, we can start exploring the first steps in this area together right now.
